Where do I get peer reviewed articles?

Answer

Thank you for your question about peer reviewed articles and where to find them. Just to make sure we are on the same page, I would like to define some terminology first.

  • Peer reviewed or Peer-reviewed or Refereed = This is a specific type of Journal Article. It means that the article was written by an expert in that field and then the article was reviewed by other experts in that field before it was even published. These articles are scholarly and academic, but they have an extra layer of rigor added to the publication process.
  • Scholarly or Academic = These could be either Journal Articles or Books. They are well-researched and written by an expert in the field. They are published by respected publishers. These are quality research sources, however, they do not have the extra layer of rigor that peer reviewed articles have.

Sometimes these terms are used interchangeably, even when they shouldn't be. If you are ever doing an assignment and you are not certain if your teacher wants you to use Peer Reviewed specifically, please ask them.

When searching for Peer Reviewed Journal Articles, from the Library Homepage click on Articles.

(As of fall 2022, you no longer need an HFC library card (barcode) to access the library’s databases from off campus.  Please use your HFC username and password to log in.)

Once you click on Articles, you will need to select a database to search. Some broad ones are:

Once you are in the database of your choice you will want to make sure you limit your results to "Full Text" and "Peer Reviewed". Type in the topic you want to find an article on, and peruse your results. There are other limiters in each database you are welcome to try such as "Date" or specific subjects.

If you need additional assistance with your research, please contact your HFC Librarian.
