I need to do a pro/con project

Answer

Thank you for your question about pro/con research or argumentative essay/speech topics.

If you have already chosen a topic, you can research your topic as keywords. For example, "universal healthcare". Doing a search for "pros and cons" is not generally useful. Instead you want to search for SPECIFIC things that would be either a "pro" or a "con". For example, "universal healthcare" and cost.

If you have not already chosen a topic, the Opposing Viewpoints (Gale in Context) database has a great list to get you started.

Once you have your topic and have decided on some specific things about the topic you want to search, you can use the following resources.

For Books, search the Catalog. Books are useful for getting an overview of your topic as well as background information and history on your topic. It is often a good place to start.

For Articles, from the Library Homepage click on Articles.

(As of fall 2022, you no longer need an HFC library card (barcode) to access the library’s databases from off campus.  Please use your HFC username and password to log in.)

Once you click on Articles, use your search terms in these databases:

If you need additional assistance, please contact your HFC Librarian.
