Research a short story
Hello, I’m a Student here taking an Eng-132. We have to use Research databases for our closing assignment.
Assignment: The short stories in your text book are the only ones that you are allowed to use. However, you must also use quality academic sources for the research paper, and incorporate those sources with either paraphrases or quotations, cite those original sources as well, and provide examples from the short story you are using to support your argument for the analysis. You need to start looking through the HFC library database for journal articles or books (NOT book reviews), that are full text articles which talk about the short story you will be analyzing. Again, this is about the short story, NOT the author. I would also like for you to go to the HFC library website and see if there are at least 6 literary analysis sources for that particular short story you have chosen.
I was Thinking about doing ”Sonny’s Blues”. Thank You!!
Answer
Hi,
For Literary Criticism, I suggest the database: Literature (Gale). If you are on the library's homepage and click on Articles, which will show a list of the library's research databases.
As of fall 2022, you no longer need an HFC library card (barcode) to access the library’s databases from off campus. Please use your HFC username and password to log in.
Once you are logged in to the databases, you will be taken to a search screen. At the top, you will see a link for "Works Search", click on it.
Once you are in "Works Search", you can type the title of your short story, "Sonny's Blues".
Once you run your search, you may see a list of title that are links, click on the correct link for your title and then you will be taken to your results.
On your results page, on the right you will see this:
Make sure "Full Text" has a check mark in it.
Now you can review your results. It sounds like your teacher wants you to stick with the "Literature Criticism" section.
You can also try searching in one of these databases:
